The third in the explorer yacht range FLEXPLORER 146 has been announced by Winch Design in partnership with Cantiere delle Marche. Driven by the new owner and his family’s deep commitment to nature and sustainability, the interior will showcase a remarkable fusion between environmental responsibility and cutting-edge design.

FLEXPLORER 146

The family are fascinated with maintaining a sustainable lifestyle as they plan to spend lengthy periods at sea. To support this philosophy the interior will be crafted from eco-friendly materials with non-toxic formulations such as reclaimed seashell composite, recycled fishing nets and woven grass, using processes that create low levels of EMF and low VOCs. Even the outfitting contractor has been selected based on their carbon-neutral bustiness model.

Sustainable furnishings

The story behind some of these materials is truly fascinating: eggshell wall finishes make use of some of the 250,000 tonnes of eggshell waste produced annually by the food industry; carpets made from recycled fishing nets contribute to the reduction of waste in the oceans; and seashell composite in the bathrooms which gives an iridescent finish and a new lease of life for discarded shells. Rustic charm is brought by recycled wood chip, offcut timer and palm leather – an eco-conscious alternative to animal leather.

Innovative engineering also focusses on environmental sustainability and incorporates a selective catalytic reduction system enabling the yacht to comply with Tier III IMO emission standards and travel to marine protected areas and sanctuaries such as the Galapagos.

Bathroom finishes

The teams from Winch Design and Cantier delle Marche have worked closely with the client throughout the process to challenge conventional products and processes and create a pioneering eco-conscious yacht. It is a pivotal moment for Winch Design which brings together years of research into ‘green’ alternatives and demonstrates their ongoing commitment to sustainability.
