On board the brand new Wally WHY200 luxury yacht

Italian shipyard Wally has released photography showcasing the first brand new unit of its luxury yacht WHY200 model after she made her public debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2021.

Wally WHY200 yacht

The 45.1m/148ft WHY200 was designed to combine the speed and performance of a semi-displacement hull with spacious social areas that guests are more used to on larger vessels. She was created jointly by the Wally design team led by Luca Bassani, while the Ferretti Group Engineering Department and Laurent Giles NA Ltd. produced the naval architecture.

aerial at anchor

The wide-body and 200 GT volume essentially offer the stability and space of a catamaran in a monohull, challenging the established expectations of the typical motor yachting experience.

The exteriors

Life outdoors is designed to be cherished and the large social areas are kitted out for making memories with family and friends, all the while having excellent views of the anchorage. The main deck aft is designed for an almost seamless transition from the interior salon into the natural world, and features an alfresco dining area along the starboard gunwales, leaving plenty of room for a generous sofa-fringed double sun pad on both sides and a walkway down the centre to the beach club.

swim platform

The beach club/lower deck swim platform is exactly where guests want to watch the world go by, in close connection to the water: A large sofa/sunbed is set into both sides, while the terrace leaves room for even more seating or for sun loungers. A fold-down terrace on both sides further extends the space to 32m2/344ft2. The two tender garages grant storage space unprecedented on luxury yachts of this size, with capacity for a 4m/13ft jet tender, Waverunner, Seabob, paddleboard and much more.

For elevated views, the upper deck aft delivers along with effortless comfort and style: The extended coachroof covers the main alfresco dining area, while sun-exposed sofa seating and sun loungers provide an area to soak up the afternoon sun or witness New Year celebrations unimpeded. The bow, meanwhile, offers a cosy spot for private conversation or somewhere to curl up with a good book for an uninterrupted reading session.

The interiors

Strong contrasts in colour, curves and angles characterise the interiors onboard the first Wally WHY200, which were designed by Studio A. Vallicelli & C. Open-pore teak is used for the furniture, and the flooring in the main guest areas on the main deck and lower deck is also teak. The minimalist setting in the 61m2/656ft2 main salon provides all the essentials for successful parties or languid afternoons where there is no timetable: The bar is ready to serve plenty of refreshments to the group seated on the sofas or watching a film, and the centrepiece laminated carbon stairway travels down to the spacious guest accommodation and up to the pilothouse and sky lounge.

main saloon

The accommodation layout of the first Wally WHY200 sleeps up to 8 guests over 4 en-suite cabins: 1 Master suite on the main deck with two en-suite bathrooms, a lower deck VIP stateroom and 2 further guests cabins that are also on the lower deck. Of particular note is the Master Suite, which provides its occupants with 37m2/398ft2 of space within the 4.7m/15.5ft glazed bow that allows for 270-degree views of the surroundings. The engine room is at the other end of the vessel, granting a peaceful night’s rest.

owner suite at bow

The helm station and sky lounge are covered by a futuristic glass and carbon dome, which has no supporting pillars and is an exceptional example of the engineering and design that provide unnoticed stability and strength.

The latest technology for connectivity and entertainment can be found onboard, where a 5G wireless network connection with home automation control makes accessing the AV systems a breeze, both inside and out. The first unit is installed with a 5.1 Premium sound system on the main and upper decks, and a 55-inch widescreen TV in the sky lounge.

luxury yacht WHY200

When it comes to power, quadruple Volvo Penta D-13 IPS 1350 engines of 1,000 HP each produce a top speed of 23 knots.

The WHY200 motor yacht is pushing the boundaries of what we expect of luxury yachts, creating a tantalising choice for Owners in 2022 and beyond.

Japan luxury yacht charters now easier than ever

The Asia Pacific Superyacht Association has announced that the process for Japan luxury yacht charters has been significantly simplified, making cruising through the region easier than ever before.

M/Y A visits Japan – Photo courtesy of Asia Pacific Superyacht Association

Previously, luxury yacht charters in Japanese waters took place under rules more closely aligned with commercial shipping:  A Crew Pass only lasted 14 days, and vessels had to complete full customs, immigration and other clearance declarations for every leg of a cruise.

Now, privately owned and commercially registered superyachts have no time limit for staying in Japan, and crews will be issued with a Multiple Landing Permit (also known as a Crew Pass) which only expires when the crewmember leaves on the yacht or by flight. Certain nationalities are also eligible for the benefit of a 90-day ‘tourist visa waiver’ which will allow them to travel and see the country on their own time.

Moreover, luxury yachts can apply for and receive a ‘Naikosen’, which is essentially a cruising permit that allows the vessel to operate as if a domestic Japanese vessel, cruising from one port to the next in Japan without going through the cumbersome customs and immigration clearances of the past.

To receive these benefits, luxury yachts will need to use the services of a recognised yachting agent that has the experience and government permissions to apply for yacht entry into Japan. For the country’s accelerated post-pandemic economic recovery, private jets and luxury domestic travel such as private limousines also have fewer restrictions.

The relaxation of restrictions has already had a positive effect on cruising in the region and Super Yacht Logistics Japan (SYL Japan) has declared that a number of luxury yachts are already planning to cruise there in 2022.
