It is believed that the Owner specifically requested that the outfitting for M/Y PROJECT OPERA be completed at the Bremen facilities, and delivery is expected in 2022.

Introducing the first Lürssen superyacht with ‘Project Pa-X-ell’ fuel cell technology

German shipyard Lürssen has announced the sale of its first-ever luxury yacht using ‘Project Pa-X-ell’ fuel cell technology.

At a recent live show, CEO Peter Lürssen described how the company has been involved with research projects since 2009 with the aim of using fuel cells on ships, and a modular fuel cell system using methanol has been in development since 2012. This latter project was given the name Pa-X-ell.

Freudenberg is the leading company in maritime methanol fuel cells, and Lürssen worked in collaboration to fuel cells that have very little maintenance and far greater efficiency than a diesel engine without creating any pollution: The fuel cells, which already meet the current specific maritime rules, can be connected to a methanol supply system, ventilation and electrical infrastructure, and in addition to the desired electricity, the by-product is only warm moist air.

Each cell consists of two bipolar plates and one membrane electrode assembly. The cells are built in between and hundreds of cells are stacked to create a fuel cell stack as part of a highly integrated fuel cell system.

A luxury yacht is currently under development which would have the fuel cell technology installed onboard. The only downside to the technology is a lower dynamic capability, creating a slightly reduced response time. To combat this, Lürssen intends to combine the fuel cells with a battery bank. The result will be more than 15 nights emission-free while at anchor, or 1,000 nautical miles of emission-free cruising at economical speed. This superyacht is expected to be only the first of many custom yachts to opt for this game-changing technology in the future.

Lürssen typically keeps the details of its builds strictly private, however, in this instance more updates on the project are expected as she progresses.

Lusben completes refit of luxury explorer yacht AUDACE

Italian shipyard Lusben have announced the completion of the recent refit of luxury explorer yacht AUDACE. The custom yacht was first launched in 2019 by Cantiere delle Marche, after commission from the late Andrea Merloni, former president of Fineldo and Indesit. After spending a season onboard, the owner decided to upgrade the yacht to even better fit his needs and to be better suited to year-round living. After Mr. Merloni’s passing, his family along with the shipyard and designers, decided to complete the refit as a tribute to his memory.

Lusben refits M/Y AUDACE

The refit was designed by Andrea Pezzini, close collaborater of Merloni and CEO of Floating Life, and architect Mauro Sculli. The most major change to the custom yacht is an increase of length from 42m to 46.6m. The stern is now 2.4m longer, with the platform having undergone a total makeover with new teak decking. A robotic telescopic gangway has also been installed, which can extend 8m. Forward, the bow has been lengthened by 2.2m. With the new, more aerodynamic bow, as well as strengthening of generators, the yachts maximum speed has increased from 15.8 knots to 17 knots, with the added bonus of a 20% consumption reduction.

A 2.4m extension was added to the stern

There have also been some substantial interior modifications, with two elevators installed to easily facilitate movements and service between decks. Electrical systems have also been upgraded, along with the owner deck and upper deck floors being overhauled and now able to be heated. The owner’s deck has also received all new furnishings and colour palette, now with a dark, sophisticated theme.

Increased aerodynamism was achieved with a 2.2m bow extension

Accommodation is for 10 guests over 5 luxurious cabins. The Owner suite is located on the dedicated Owners deck, and boasts a private deck, jacuzzi and salon. The remaining accommodation is spread over the main deck and lower deck, and consists of 2 double cabins and 2 twin cabins, allowing for a variety of family and friend group sizes aboard this beautiful yacht.
