Sailing yacht GALMA – the first wallywind110 – is launched by Wally Yachts

Sailing yacht GALMA has been launched, hitting the water for the first time at the weekend at a ceremony attended by Wally Yachts and Ferretti Group management plus the entire production team.

Sailing yacht GALMA launches

“The launch of this first semi-custom sail model since Wally became part of Ferretti Group in 2019 is a very significant moment for us,” says Stefano de Vivo, Wally Managing Director. “Not only does it coincide with the brand’s 30th anniversary, but it also once again confirms how relevant the sailing superyacht sector is for Wally. We have always been leader in this segment, and we aim to continue anticipating market trends by creating yachts capable of becoming true benchmarks in both yachting and design”.

She is the first 33.42m (109’ 8”) wallywind110 and features naval architecture from Judel/lvrolijk & Co. and exterior and interior design from Santa Maria Magnolfi. The bright metallic paint across the all-carbon hull has hints of blue which changes tone with the light creating an extremely elegant profile.

“The thoughtful study of the wallywind110’s deck spaces has resulted in an 80 square meter cockpit, free of technical equipment (relocated to the stern), comparable to that of a sailing superyacht at least 60 meters long. The owner and their guests can relax on sofas, sunbeds, and seating. Not to mention the other two lounge areas located on the ‘sea terrace’ at the stern and on the foredeck.”  explains Wally Founder and Chief Designer Luca Bassani.

Luxury yacht GALMA will be joined by the second wallywind110 hull which is currently under construction and the range will also include a wallywind130 and wallywind150.

Iconic sailing yacht HANUMAN arrives at Holterman Shipyard for refit

Royal Huisman’s 42.10m (138′) sailing yacht HANUMAN was originally built in 2009 as a J Class racing yacht and has now arrived at Holterman Shipyards in the Netherlands for a refit. Based on a 1937 design by Charles Nicholson, she has been a staple of the J Class racing scene where she scored victories in events such as the St Barts Bucket and the Superyacht Cup Palma.

Sailing yacht HANUMAN arrives for refit at Holterman Shipyard

Luxury yacht HANUMAN arrived in the Netherlands at the end of April, and after the rig was stepped and the yacht was carefully loaded onto a transport barge, she arrived at Holterman’s Meppel yard at the end of May for the full programme of works to begin in earnest.

“The idea of the refit started with the need to replace the teak decks, but that has expanded to include something in every area of the yacht,” Tim Wedzinga, Refit Manager at Holterman Shipyard explains. “We will be installing a whole new air-conditioning system, new fridge freezer systems, upgrading the hydraulic system, replacing some interior floor soles, moving some deck hardware to more optimal positions, varnishing wood elements, and painting the underwater body and the topsides.”

Wedzinga and other members of the Holterman team have direct experience with the yacht, having raced her as part of the crew or through their involvement with the original construction and engineering. The shipyard is proud of its hard working yet relaxed attitude and is planning a year’s worth of refitting work to be completed within seven months.

Work has already begun on the first stage of the refit which includes unmounting the rudder, removing 500 pieces of deck hardware, and stripping the old deck down to the bare aluminium. Before work commenced the shipyard had to make some minor alterations to its sheds to be able to accommodate her length.

“I think the Hanuman project will surprise a lot of people because it’s not what Holterman is known for, but I think it really shows our flexibility,” Wedzinga concludes. “We never say no, and we will always find solutions to accommodate a project. And HANUMAN will really stand as an example of the skills we have not only within Holterman in terms of craftspeople, but also in terms of coordinating a complex project with minimal fuss while ensuring maximum quality.”

Sailing yacht HANUMAN will make her racing debut, post refit, at the 2005 St Barts Bucket.

Winners of the World Superyacht Awards 2024 announced

Earlier this month the winners of the World Superyacht Awards 2024 were announced at a glittering ceremony held in Venice. The winners come from some of the most renowned shipyards, naval architects and designers in the world and recognise outstanding achievement in yacht building across a range of categories from Motor Yacht of the Year to the Voyager’s and Legacy Award.

We brought you details of the full list of nominees last month and now we are delighted to reveal the winners in the Big Four Awards:

Motor Yacht of the Year

Winner: M/Y ALCHEMY | Rossinavi | Philippe Briand | Enrico Gobbi
2023 | 66m (216’6”) | 12 guests

The Motor Yacht of the Year is awarded by the judges for the best yacht across all the motor yacht categories. As her name suggests luxury yacht ALCHEMY is a magical creation born from the combined skills of her design team and discerning owner. Her crowning glory, specifically noted by the judges is her suspended glass staircase which opens up the main salon in a sculptural form plus her overall layout which includes outstanding storage and crew areas.

Sailing Yacht of the Year

Luxury sailing yacht SARISSA

Winner: S/Y SARISSA| Royal Huisman | Malcolm McKeon Yacht Design | Liaigre
2022 | 59.7m (196′) | 10 guests

The Sailing Yacht of the Year winner came from the 40m and above category and was considered by the judges to be the most notable from both categories. Sailing yacht SARISSA was built with performance sailing in mind, and it was her groundbreaking propulsion system and state-of-the-art sails and rig plus exquisite interior which appealed to the judges.

Refitted Yacht

Winner: M/Y CORINTHIA VII | Lurssen | Tim Heywood | Bizzozero Cassina Architects
2023 | 97m (318ft) | 12 guests

Superyacht CARINTHIA VII stood out in this category because of her ambitious refit, updating her from a private yacht to commercial in a mere 10 months, while remaining true to the original design. As well as her technical and structural upgrades to meet commercial code requirements, charter-friendly amenities were introduced including a swimming pool and gym.

Winner: M/Y H3 | OceanCo | Lateral Naval Architects | Reymond Langton Design
2000/2023 | 105.0m (344’6″) | 32 guests

What makes a rebuild rather than a refit? If a significant amount metal has been replaced and the interior and technical areas have seen major alterations, the yacht is considered in the rebuild class. Superyacht H3 saw a multi-faceted alteration which clearly stood out from the other nominees and was so extreme, the team at Oceano considered her to be akin to a new build. She was extended by 10 metres, with two metres added to the forward deck in addition to an eight-metre stern extension. Oceanco estimates that rebuilding H3 saved a year and a considerable amount of carbon, compared to starting a new build this length from scratch.

Legacy Award: Paola Trifiro

Paola has been a committed member of the World Superyacht Awards judging panel and given her time and energy to the awards since 2012. As her fellow judges attested: “Paola has built and sailed a number of spectacular superyachts and is well known and respected in the industry. She is a great personality, and through her long-term work as a judge, she has supported the industry in many ways. She is an icon, instantly recognisable and highly knowledgeable.”

The ceremony celebrated Paola Trifirò’s remarkable life in the yachting industry with the presentation of a well-deserved Legacy Award.

The CharterWorld team have been delighted to get to know the nominees and winners to understand the direction of travel for outstanding superyacht design and building – and of course to welcome some of the winners to the charter market.
