Why Choose a Charter Yacht for Cannes?

During the Cannes Film Festival, the city’s hotels, restaurants, and venues are bustling with stars, filmmakers, and industry professionals. A yacht offers a serene yet glamorous escape from the crowds while keeping you at the heart of the action. From the deck, you can enjoy the stunning views of Cannes’ coastline, host private screenings or cocktail parties, and rub shoulders with other festival attendees in style.

Yacht charters during the festival often include access to VIP events, from gala dinners to after-parties. Many yachts also feature state-of-the-art amenities such as private cinemas, spa facilities, and jacuzzis, ensuring your experience is as indulgent as it is unforgettable.

Highlights of the 2025 Festival

Navigating Fees and Expenses on a Luxury Yacht Charter

If your plans for 2025 include a luxury yacht charter vacation, we are here to help with all the information you need to make sense of yacht charter fees and expenses. Whether you’re celebrating a milestone birthday, a special family occasion, or embarking on your retirement in style, few experiences rival the luxury of a private yacht charter. The allure of open seas, the charm of a Mediterranean harbour, or the seclusion of a Caribbean beach paired with unparalleled bespoke service creates a truly unforgettable vacation.

Acapella yacht sailing in the Eastern Mediterranean

On-line listings reveals a vast array of yacht options, each with its own price tag. While budget planning is essential, understanding the full scope of costs can help you avoid surprises and collaborating with an experienced charter broker is invaluable.

What Is a Private Yacht Charter?

Chartering a yacht involves renting the vessel from its owner for exclusive use over a specified period. Your itinerary is tailored in advance, granting access to all onboard amenities, which may include water toys like jet skis, paddleboards, and water slides, or luxurious features such as jacuzzis, beach clubs, and spas. Crewed charters also include a team—a captain, deck crew, stewardesses, and a chef—dedicated to meeting your needs and preferences.

How Much Does It Cost to Charter a Yacht?

The base charter fee, often advertised as a weekly rate, is largely influenced by the yacht’s size. Other factors include the yacht’s age or recent refits, onboard amenities, fixtures and fittings, type (motor, sailing, or catamaran), crew size, and high-season demand. Special events like the Monaco Grand Prix or Cannes Film Festival can also drive up prices.

Monaco Grand Prix. Photo credit: Larry Koester

High season—typically winter in the Caribbean and summer in the Mediterranean—commands the highest rates, often coinciding with school holidays. For a more budget-friendly experience with comparable weather, consider shoulder seasons just before or after peak periods.

The base fee typically covers crew wages and food, plus listed amenities. Occasionally, extra charges apply for jet ski hire, fuel, or specialized toys like inflatable water parks. A charter broker will clarify all inclusions, with contracts often adhering to industry standards like MYBA (Worldwide Yachting Association) or Standard Caribbean Terms (SCT).

What Is an Advanced Provisioning Allowance (APA)?

In addition to the base fee, many charters operate on a “plus expenses” model, where an Advanced Provisioning Allowance (APA) covers additional costs. These expenses include food, beverages, special requests, internet, fuel, harbour fees, and dockage. While this may seem like an added burden, the APA provides flexibility, allowing guests to customize their experience.

Superyacht ROCK.IT – five star service from the crew

Fuel costs are incurred based on usage, covering items like tenders and jet skis, while dockage fees vary significantly—from premium marina spots at events like the Monaco Grand Prix to no fees in remote locations. Typically amounting to 30% of the weekly charter rate, the APA is prepaid and managed by the captain, who tracks expenses and provides a detailed account post-charter. Any unused funds are refunded, while additional funds may be required if the balance runs low.

Are Taxes and Insurance Included?

Local taxes and VAT are often applied to charter fees, depending on the region and itinerary. For example, taxes may vary based on where you board and disembark, particularly if multiple countries are involved. A professional broker can navigate these complexities and ensure compliance with local regulations.

Insurance included in the base fee generally covers risks like accidental damage, third-party liability, and use of onboard toys. However, certain activities, such as jet skiing, may require specific licenses to maintain coverage. It’s also advisable to purchase cancellation and curtailment insurance to safeguard against unforeseen circumstances affecting your travel plans.

Is It Customary to Tip the Crew?

While tipping is not mandatory, it’s customary to offer gratuities reflecting the quality of service received. Tips generally range between 10% and 20% of the base charter rate and should be presented to the captain, who will distribute them fairly among the crew. Remember, the entire team—from the stewardesses and deckhands to the sous chef and interior crew—works tirelessly to ensure your experience is flawless.

Final Thoughts

Though the costs of a luxury yacht charter may seem complex, careful planning and a clear understanding of contracts and fees can help ensure a seamless experience. By partnering with a knowledgeable charter broker, you can navigate these waters with confidence, focusing on relaxation and adventure. With their guidance, your journey will be smooth from planning to disembarkation, leaving you with memories that last a lifetime.
